2011 - 2012 Youth Soloist Competition Winners

First Place Winner
Dana Nix - Flute

Dana is from Parsippany, NJ and has been performing on flute for the past four years. She has played flute in the NJAB Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, and Region I Symphonic Band, and has played piccolo in the NJAB Wind Ensemble, Region I Symphonic Band, and Region I Orchestra. She also plays flute, piccolo and clarinet in pit orchestras for North Jersey high schools. In October, Dana will be representing her country in the prestigious Marine Corps Band. She has studied under the tutelage of Amanda Kober for four years. She has especially enjoyed playing with RCB at the Side By Side Concerts for the past two years and is honored to be accompanied by them for this concert.

James Lee - Saxophone

Saxophonist James Lee is a senior at Ridgewood High School. Having spent four years in the RHS Music Program, James is proud of his participation in the percussion, saxophone, jazz, and wind ensembles, pit orchestra, and his four years in the marching band. Beyond curricular ensembles, he has had the honor and opportunity of holding principal alto and/or tenor saxophone positions in the All County Band, Region I Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band, Region I Saxophone Ensemble, Region I Jazz Ensemble, NJ All-State Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band, and the NJ All-State Jazz Ensemble. His experiences as a musician have provided him the fortune of playing on the bandstands at Trump Plaza, New Jersey Performing Arts Center, and the Catalina Jazz Club. In addition, he has worked with a variety of esteemed musicians, such as Ingrid Jensen, Mark Gross, Michael Philip Mossman, Dr. Dennis Fischer, Darryl Bott, Dave Stryker, Denis DiBlasio, and Wayne Bergeron. James wants to thank his teachers Mark Friedman, Yun-suk Lee, Mr. Haas, Mr. Fink, and Mr. Luckenbill for their tutelage, and his parents for their love and support.

Amanda Kam - Flute

Flutist Amanda Kam, a 15-year old honors student in the 10th grade at Millburn High School, enjoys a multi-faceted life as a soloist, orchestral player, band member, chamber musician, and student. She is in her school's accelerated band program, as well as its symphonic band and flute ensemble. Last year, she was chosen to be in the NJ All North Jersey Region High School Symphonic Band. She also ranked first chair in the Junior High School Region I Band and became the principal flutist in the Junior High School Region I Symphonic Orchestra in the spring of 2011. This year, she played as the first chair flutist in the Region I High School Wind Ensemble, chamber ensemble, and was a member in the NJ All State Symphonic Band. She is also a current student in the Manhattan School of Music Precollege Division, where she is the principal flute player in the Symphony Orchestra. Amanda also enjoys learning other instruments. At the age of eight, she had her debut in the Weill Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall as a multi-winner of the Piano Teacher’s Society of America Competition. Besides playing music, she also loves to dance ballet with the New Jersey Ballet’s Junior Company.
