2013 - 2014 Youth Soloist Competition Winners

First Place Winner
Emmett Rapaport - Saxophone

Emmett Rapaport is a senior at Ridgewood High School. He is currently a student of Lois Hicks-Wozniak and has previously studied with Mark Friedman. At RHS, Emmett has been a member of the Wind Ensemble, Jazz Lab, Big Band, Percussion Ensemble, Saxophone Quartet, and Saxophone Ensemble. Additionally, he has performed in the Pit Orchestra for the New Players' musicals Guys and Dolls and The Drowsy Chaperone. He has played alto and tenor saxophone in the RHS Marching Band and is currently the soprano chair of the RHS saxophone quartet. Emmett had been a recipient of a RHS "Maroon and White" Solo Recital for the past three years. Outside of the RHS music program, Emmett has had the privilege of holdingprincipal chairs in many honors ensembles including the NJ Region I Symphonic Band, the NJ Region I Saxophone Ensemble, the NJ Region I Jazz Ensemble, the NJ All State Symphonic Band, and the NJ All State Jazz Ensemble. He was also named Overall Outstanding Soloist at the2013 Princeton Jazz Festival. Through these opportunities Emmett has had the pleasure of working with outstanding artists including Dave Stryker, Michael Philip Mossman, Tom Malone, Wayne Bergeron, David Demsey, and Don Braden. Additionally, Emmett values teaching just as much as performing. Every summer, he is a volunteer teaching assistant at the Ridgewood Summer Music Academy, instructing younger woodwind students, hoping to spread the passion and joy of musical studies. Emmett has also attended programs including the Wells Fargo Jazz for Teens program and the Eastman Saxophone Summer Institute. Emmett would like to thank his teachers Lois Hicks-Wozniak, Mark Friedman, his band directors, Mr. Jeffrey Haas and Mr. JohnLuckenbill III for their instruction and guidance, and his family and friends for their never ending support.

Katy Wong - Harp

Katy Wong is an aspiring harpist currently studying with Kirsten Agresta. She has won multiple awards and recognitions, including 1st place in the Emerging Artists Division of the Young Artist's Harp Competition in Rabun Gap, Georgia, and 4th in the New Artists Division; as well as 3rd place in the 2013 Passion of Music Festival held at Carnegie Hall. Katy is also active in her local community, playing in numerous local orchestras at the state and regional level. She was the principal harpist for the NJ ALl State Wind Ensemble and a guest harpist for orchestras including the NJCJ Wind Ensemble, Bloomfield Wind Ensemble, NYC Face the Music, All-State Intermediate Orchestra, and Bergen Youth Orchestra. Currently, Katy is the harpist for the NY Youth Symphony and been selected to perform at the upcoming 2014 World Harp Congress in Sydney, Australia on behalf of the Focus on Youth Committee.

Katy also shares her music at local senior centers and in fundraisers for Asperger's Syndrome and Auttism awareness sponsored by the West Bergen Mental Healthcare, North Jersey Friendship House, and Comprehensive Behavioral Healthcare. As part of the Tri-M National Honor Music Society at her high school, she also plays at Van Dykes Senior Center. During the summer, Katy is a musician for the Music in the Night program and assists young musicians at the Summer Music Academy.

Studying piano since the age of four, Katy has won several competitions such as the NJMEA, PMTGNJ and the NJ Federation of Music. A junior at Ridgewood High School, she currently serves as the primary accompanist for the RHS Chamber Choir. In light of their continuous guidance and support, Katy would like to thank her teachers, parents, and friends.

Laura Rann - Euphonium

Laura Rann is a senior at Mahwah High School who has been playing the euphonium for nine years. Laura studies privately with Aaron Vanderweele and plans to major in music next year at the university level. She has been involved in many activities throughout her four years in high school. Laura has participated in the New Jersey Region One Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, Chamber Ensemble, and New Jersey All State Symphonic Band. At Mahwah High School, Laura has participated in the Symphonic Band, Jazz Band, Brass Ensemble, Marching Band, and Pit Orchestra. Laura spent the past two summers at the Interlochen Center for the Arts Camp as principal euphonium in the Interlochen Symphonic Band and the World Youth Wind Symphony. She recently won the West Point Youth Concerto Competition and soloed with the West Point Military Band. Outside of the musical world, Laura is in the National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society at her high school. She is a Girl Scout and enjoys teaching Sunday school with her mother to kindergarteners and first graders.
